On October 21, 1872, Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany settled the long-running dispute between the United States and Great Britain over the San Juan Islands by ruling that the Haro Strait, not the British claim of the Rosario Strait, was the true border between the two nations. Thus, the San Juans became U.S. territory, ending the Pig War.
